Directly opposite the Duomo, on the street that was once Via Larga, a new Florentine address will open on 1st August, and it is one worth knowing about. Palazzo Ruspoli on Via de’ Martelli has roots reaching back to the Renaissance; the site once housed the canonry of the Baptistery of San Giovanni, though what stands today reflects the city’s brief, ambitious moment as capital of Italy in the late nineteenth century. Interior architect Luigi Fragola has worked with the aim to preserve its historicity: recovered antique floors, hand-forged ironwork and a palette of deep Florentine greens. Inside there are twelve rooms and suites, three apartments, and a private rooftop terrace that overlooks Brunelleschi’s dome (best at sunset). Suites have direct views of the cupola; the larger apartments stretch to around 200 square metres and feel like your private home in the city.
