Pantelleria has some of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen. A gigantic red sphere melts into the horizon, painting the sky indigo, violet, yellow and pastel blue as it descends into the sea. There is no surprise that the island has spiritual essence; cultures, influences and natural elements collide together to create a wild, enchanting setting. Elements that mark the foundation of Pantelleria, island that in Arabic translates to ‘Daughter of the Wind’. Air, fire, earth and water are the four Elements that are integral to our lives.

what to do
Wine tasting experience at donnafugata

One of the most historic and renowned wineries in Sicily is Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo’s Donnafugata, which they founded in the 18th century. Although Giacomo’s family was in the industry since before, he decided to create his own path by expanding from the family winery in Marsala and, in time, covering different parts of the island including Etna, Vittoria and Pantelleria. This particular winery is a treat, with the little Pantesco vines that have a peculiar shape to protect them from the strong island winds (which is also celebrating their 10th anniversary this year since being listed as a Unesco world heritage site in 2014). Here you can book a visit around the cellar, learn about the production process and taste a variety of wines. Our suggestion is the Zabib tasting, in which you discover three wines made with the native grape including a white, a semi-sweet and the sweet, highly prized Ben Ryé. WEBSITE
Take a dip at Cala Bue Marino
This little cove is nestled along the north-western side of the island. Volcanic-tinted dramatic cliffs surround a small rocky bay from which you can place your beach towel, soak up some sun and dip into the crystal coloured waters. It’s always recommended to bring a pair of water shoes as the rocks can be sharp. This is also a prime sunset point – so should you wish for an evening dip then bring a small picnic and enjoy the show.
Boat tour around the island
Whether you wish to rent with a skipper or not, witnessing the island from sea is one of the best ways to discover Pantelleria, especially as some caves and bays are only accessible via water. Pack a picnic, a bottle of ice-cold wine and prepare to be amazed with the untouched landscapes and translucent waters. Be aware that the island is very windy, so you may find your boat trip cancelled – you may want to ask for some advice at your hotel before booking.
drink
Coste Ghirlanda
Nestled in the most beautiful valley of the island, amid the National Park, lies Coste Ghirlanda, the wine estate of the Sikelia hotel. Here, you can book a table for dinner or simply come to enjoy the untouched landscapes while you sip a glass of pure Zibibbo wine (the native grape of the island) cultivated on this very turf. Alongside your glass, the aperitif consists of little bites such as olives, artichokes, hummus and various delicious finger foods. Remember to book in advance as, in summer and especially on the weekends, it gets very busy. WEBSITE
Altamarea
Here, we witnessed one of the most beautiful, violet-coloured sunsets. Altamarea is a dynamic restaurant & bar where you can come along for a golden hour glass of wine and nibbles to savour the enchanting landscapes. Of course, if you feel tempted to stay over for dinner as you watch the delicious plates served to the tables then by all means, it’s recommended. Also, keep you eye out for events; every now and again during summer weekends Altamarea turns into a drink and dance venue. WEBSITE
WHERE TO EAT
Osteria il Principe e il Pirata
Perhaps one of the most scenic restaurants in Pantelleria, located on the north-eastern side of the coast. Here, the sun sets before your eyes as you order a delicious feast of freshly caught seafood. Being so close to Africa, traditional cuisine of the island consists of Maghreb inspired dishes, hence the cous cous is a great starter to share. You will want to book this place in advance too, if you wish to ensure a breezy table on the terrace. WEBSITE

WHERE TO SLEEP
Parco dei Sesi

Amid the Parco Archeologico dei Sesi, where the first civilisation in Pantelleria once settled, Margot and Massimiliano also found a home; although this home was opened to welcome guests to savour the magic of the island. It was here, where the couple met, fell in love and, after a few years of long distance relationship, decided to finally establish themselves and focus on delivering a holistic concept of hospitality where wellbeing, peace and nature coexist. The 13 rooms are idyllic; designed in harmony with the wild, Mediterranean surroundings enhanced with African art, sourced and selected by Margot. Around the property, cosy areas and linen curtains provide the ultimate nooks for relaxation; while the terraces provide prime position for watching the sun slowly set in the horizon. Conviviality is the heart of Parco dei Sesi, with four dinners a week that bring guests together over sociable chats, wine and home cooked food, fostering new connections. WEBSITE
