A new private club is coming to Milan. It’s called The Wilde, and its flagship location, the first and main venue, will be in the Lombardy capital. Plans are already in place to bring the format to London, New York, and other prominent international destinations. The Wilde, a brand concept created by Gary Landesberg, aims to create a diverse and eclectic meeting place where members contribute to a mix of skills and compelling stories. Located at Via dei Giardini 16, The Wilde is set to open by the fall of 2024. It will be a place to enjoy throughout the entire day, from breakfast to live music programs and entertainment planned for after dinner.
The Wilde not only reaffirms Milan as a global destination but also positions itself as a special opportunity for the many talents seeking a broad professional experience.
We discussed this with Marco Olivieri, General Manager of The Wilde Milano, who is building the team in anticipation of the upcoming launch.
The Wilde represents a change of direction for you. After nearly 30 years in luxury hospitality, for the first time, you’ll be managing a lifestyle incubator without rooms. What challenges do you anticipate?
“We need to be even better! The main goal is to have members who consider their affiliation with The Wilde as a lasting value. We will introduce to Milan a hospitality formula that works very well in the Anglo-Saxon world. Additionally, we will develop programs and events to encourage networking and create a community with a strong cultural and interest-based identity. We will offer a cosmopolitan culinary experience in characterful settings and aim to leverage technology to experience The Wilde in a contemporary way.”
Like all captains, you also need a top-notch crew: What qualities should ideal candidates for The Wilde possess?
“Our ideal candidate must demonstrate a passion for hospitality, possess empathy and intuition, teamwork spirit, but also creativity and innovative thinking, regardless of the field in which they will operate. This approach is what we expect from mixology to cuisine to events. Needless to say, languages are fundamental. English is a must, and any additional language will be a plus. The Wilde and Milan have an international vocation.”
How have you seen the younger generation’s approach to the careers offered in this sector change?
“Today, everything evolves rapidly, and this also applies to our sector. Hospitality is full of opportunities even for the younger generation, but it’s not always easy to convey the message of what it truly is: a sexy, interesting job in beautiful places. It might partly be our fault for not explaining it well enough. Starting with education. Think about the name ‘Istituto Alberghiero’: outdated in both term and content, the subjects taught are not in step with what our world is.”
What do they like and dislike (or no longer like) about this career?
“Young people have changed the order of their priorities, they put their passions and lives first, and they’re probably scared of working during hours perceived as free time. The most daunting aspect for them is the schedule. We will be open every day from 8 AM to 1 AM, but that doesn’t mean continuous work. The Wilde guarantees 8-hour shifts with a rhythm of 5 working days and 2 consecutive days off. It’s a rotating system, so everyone gets free mornings, afternoons, and evenings, as well as Saturdays and Sundays.”
What is underestimated by young people nowadays?
“They don’t take into account the many positive aspects of this sector. We work in elegant environments designed by top architects, with an international atmosphere where the world comes to you. You meet people from different sectors and places. Personally, I consider these aspects an immense privilege. Do you know what it means to host the Japanese Prime Minister and his delegation? You have to adapt the facility, understand their culture, learn the protocols. Every time it’s a thrilling challenge, there’s always something to learn. Luxury hospitality is a universe of invaluable career and training opportunities.”
What opportunities does The Wilde offer?
“We are a new brand with great international prospects: those who start in Milan will have the opportunity to travel, relocate, and build their careers in other locations. Additionally, those who work with us have the chance to grow quickly. For example, someone who comes from an ‘assistant restaurant manager’ role can be hired as a ‘restaurant manager,’ thus improving their position. Of course, this assumes they have the right qualities and skills.”
What advice would you give to today’s 18-year-olds, who are often confused and scared about their professional future?
“I would tell them not to be afraid of making mistakes. Today, there is work available. Of course, finding the right one isn’t immediate, but you have to try, set a goal, and trust those who conduct the interview, especially if more people are present: it means they see something good in you.”
Are there still opportunities to join The Wilde during this delicate and exciting phase?
“Yes, we still have some positions open. I would just say that participating in the creation of a new club is a unique and stimulating opportunity, an experience that allows you to be an integral part of an innovative project. If you’re ready to take the next step in your hospitality career and be part of something truly new in Italy, The Wilde Milano is the right place.”
