In 2003, Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran met in Milan and founded Dimorestudio, one of the most prestigious design and architecture studios in Italy. Together they have developed a distinctive and recognisable style that blends influences from design, architecture, art, and fashion.
Their work is divided between design projects, their showroom, and a gallery that brings together historic pieces, their own productions, and works by emerging talents. For them, it is natural to mix a nineteenth-century object with a piece by Vico Magistretti, or with one by a lesser-known designer chosen with their discerning eye. At the root of every project are their different personalities: Emiliano, who loves decadence, and Britt, who is more precise and almost “Goethean”—he studied chemistry and has a passion for literature and travel.
In addition to private residences, boutiques, and exhibition design, they have completed several hospitality projects, including the La Dolce Vita train for Orient Express, the bistrot at the Grand Hotel et de Milan, Langosteria Cucina restaurant in Milan, Villa Sheherezade in Dubrovnik, and The Arts Club in Dubai. Here we asked them to tell us about a place they particularly love. They chose the black island of Pantelleria in Sicily, where they relax and recharge their creativity.
Why did you choose this destination?
A few years ago we bought a dammuso on Pantelleria and since then the island has become our refuge: a place where everything feels slower, more intense, and where even silence has a special quality. It’s an island that teaches you how to look, to feel the light and the wind, and to enjoy the beauty of simple things.
The essence of the place?
Pantelleria is balance: between sea and volcano, light and shadow, architecture and nature. Everything here has proportion and harmony, and living here teaches you the meaning of slow time and attention to detail.
How to feel local?
Treat yourself to a swim at Scauri Basso and then stop for lunch at La Vela: the catch of the day is served on a tray and the almond and pepper salad is fresh and fragrant. Sitting there, with the high sun and the sea in front of you, means savouring the island’s slow rhythm and authentic flavours, just like those who live here every day.
The best time to go?
Spring and early autumn: the light is strong yet soft, the colours full, the scents intense. The island reveals all its authenticity and you can enjoy its peace without the summer crowds.
A place to visit?
Lago di Venere: a small volcanic crater filled with warm, mineral-rich water that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. It’s like walking into a natural painting – light, colour and geology all at once.
A secret to reveal?
The pantesco gardens hidden among the dry-stone walls. Their geometry and the scents of herbs and citrus are a small everyday miracle you don’t expect, perfect for feeling far away from everything.
An excursion to take?
A walk through the terraces of alberello vineyards, or a small boat trip along the coast. The light and landscape change at every turn, and each view feels composed like a work of natural art.
The best time of day to… enjoy Pantelleria without rushing?
Early morning. The island is quieter, the air fresh, and the colours of the sea and the dammusi seem more intense. It’s the right moment for a walk or simply to sit and breathe in the island’s rhythm.
A moment of relaxation?
In the garden of our dammuso, with a good book, while the light wind slips through the stone walls: nothing else is needed to feel happy and at peace.
A special experience?
Swimming in the natural pools or hidden coves: the warm water, the volcanic vapours and the colour of the sea create something almost meditative.
The most beautiful view?
We love the viewpoint at Montagna Grande, where the sun sets behind the volcano and the sea lights up in a thousand shades. Looking down at the island, with dammusi scattered among the terraces and the wind moving through the trees, is one of those moments that stays with you forever.
An unforgettable dish?
The fish couscous at Ristorante La Favarotta is a small masterpiece of pantesco cuisine. Made with the day’s fresh ingredients and local spices, it’s rich and intense, telling the story of Pantelleria in every bite. A dish that lingers and instantly brings the island to the table.
The drink?
Around six we stop at Kayà Kayà by the port of Scauri for a pantesco mojito while watching the sunset over the island. A simple moment, a glass in hand and the sea ahead, perfect for closing the day.
A fun evening?
At sunset we like to stop at Cala Gadir or in a small harbour, sitting in a fish trattoria with friends. We order something fresh and pair it with a glass of local wine. The sea in front of us, the sun dropping behind the volcano, and the chatter among friends make the evening special: simple, authentic, perfect for truly feeling the island.
The hotel of the hear?
Our favourite is Tenuta Borgia. A simple, welcoming place where the stone dammusi and outdoor spaces converse with olive groves, vineyards and palms. From the terrace, the view opens onto the sea and surrounding nature, offering an experience that tells the identity and traditions of Pantelleria.
A memory to pack in your suitcase?
A small jar of salted capers from Bonomo & Giglio Capperificio. A simple souvenir that holds the scents and flavours of Pantelleria and takes you straight back to the island every time you open it.
