For four generations, Barmasse family has been synonymous with the Matterhorn, standing tall at 4,478 meters in the Alps, straddling the border between Valle d’Aosta in Italy and Switzerland. A legendary mountaineer, Hervé’s name is etched into the history of some of the world’s most challenging climbs. From the smooth granite slab of Cerro Piergiorgio in Patagonia to the first ascent of Beka Brakay Chhok in Pakistan, and a pioneering solo route on his home peak—the mighty Matterhorn. Hervé has carved his legacy into the mountain’s rugged face, becoming the climber with the most first ascents, winter routes, and solo climbs on its storied slopes. Recently, he made headlines again with an awe-inspiring feat in the Himalayas, scaling the formidable South Face of Shisha Pangma, 8,027 meters, in just 13 hours—true alpine style.
How would you describe Italy today in just a few words?
The great beauty.
Why Cervinia?
I chose Breuil Cervinia and Valtournenche because up high, where the forests give way to alpine meadows and glaciers, if you look up, you see the Matterhorn, which is considered the mountain symbol of all mountains in the world. People come from all over the world to admire it, take a photo, and record a video memory.
A place to visit
The village of Cheneil, at around 2000 meters altitude, accessible by a funicular. Up there, time seems to have stopped—no roads, cows and horses grazing, the stream winding through the meadows, and trails that climb the surrounding mountains. After a walk—there are paths for all levels—you can stop at Pensione Bich, enjoy a dish of Valdostan cuisine, or simply dip your feet in the stream, rejuvenate, and listen to the rustling of the wind caressing the trees.
A stolen secret
The night. In the mountains, taking a walk when the moon rises brings a unique sense of well-being.
An inspiring hike
From Perreres, head towards the Cignana window and Pancherot, where you can enjoy the best view of the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif. At the end of the hike, don’t forget to stop by the ancient Flamini bakery. To make the most of the hike, rely on an alpine guide or a mid-mountain guide. You can find information at the tourist centres in Valtournenche and Breuil Cervinia.
The best time of day for…
Dawn and the fresh morning air. A perfect moment for a yoga session.
A special experience
Climbing a 4000-meter mountain, the Breithorn, which today, thanks to the Alpine Crossing—the new connection between Italy and Switzerland—makes this possible for almost everyone.
The essence of Cervinia
Mountain therapy. Yes, because there is a mountain for everyone—those who love outdoor activities and those who prefer to relax. Breathing and listening. In the mountains, they are the clock to reference, offering the rhythm of the day.
That memorable evening?
Walking by moonlight and starlight, without lamps, guided by instinct and the music of nature.
An unforgettable dish
The Seupa Valpellinentze at the Neiges D’antan hotel.
The most beautiful view
You have to climb to the summit of Grand Tournalin, where at the end of the 1800s, a small astronomical observatory was located.
The Souvenir?
Everyone has their own—memories are generated by our sensitivity to embrace the emotions that life’s experiences bring us.
The drink
Valdostan wines. Among many, I recommend Prisonnier by Anselmet.
What to pack for a weekend
The courage to live.
The beach for a swim
A dip in Lago Blu.
How to feel like a local
Greet with a thumbs-up, the typical Valdostan greeting called Pudzo, meaning “cheers, all good”.
