Ideas for a weekend
in Taormina

Alessandro Florio started out as a tattoo artist in his hometown Taormina, and in time felt compelled to work on larger canvases to fully express his creativity. His paintings, which are currently displayed at his atelier in Taormina as well as in Villa Sant’Andrea, incorporate elements reflecting his Sicilian roots, the influence of Eastern art, and a profound respect for nature.

How would you describe Italy today in very few words?
Sacred and Profane. Spaghetti and Caravaggio with a touch of love.

Why Taormina?
Well, I was born and raised here, Taormina chose me and I feel very lucky about that; I don’t think I could live anywhere else.

A stolen secret?
Before you start painting on the canvas you must already imagine the finished work in your mind. Art is not improvisation.

An unmissable day trip?
Climbing the steps of the Via Crucis along the ring road leads up to the Madonna della Rocca church. From there, the view is breathtaking, like a postcard; you can hold Taormina in the palm of your hand.

The best time of day?
After finishing painting, I spend time with my daughter Paloma, taking her up and down Corso Umberto. I often take her for ice cream in Piazza IX Aprile, the panoramic square where the historic Café Wunderbar is located.

An inspiring walk?
I often walk early in the morning, when Corso Umberto is still quiet. I observe the flower-filled balconies and notice views that have yet to be explored, even though Taormina is not a large city.

A relaxing moment?
In summer, I can’t wait to go to the bay of Mazzarò, my favourite place. We have a house there where we spend our summer days. In the evening, I head to Lido la Pigna, where you can enjoy a beer with lemon granita.

A special experience?
I painted for Lamborghini in one of the historic homes of Taormina, Casa Cuseni, a house/museum that has housed artists such as Picasso and Dalì in the early 1900s. I certainly recommend booking a visit here.

The essence of Taormina?
For me, living in a place but always feeling like I’m on vacation, thanks to the influx of so many people, is timeless. The essence of Taormina is essentially LIVING it.

That memorable evening?
In July 2023, I inaugurated my first solo exhibition in Taormina titled “Window to the South,” this was such a memorable evening for me.

An unforgettable dish and where?
As a true Italian, I recommend a good plate of pasta with fresh seafood at the restaurant, Nunziatina, a magical place with unique cuisine.

The drink?
Paloma with Mezcal, my daughter is named Paloma, in honour of the Sicilian singer-songwriter Franco Battiato. Only later did I discover this drink, which I love to enjoy, especially at the Morgana bar, a magical place where reality distorts at night.

The hotel of the heart?
Villa Sant’Andrea and Grand Hotel Timeo, part of the Belmond chain, are beyond words in describing the beauty of these places. Nestled in the heart of Taormina next to the Greek theatre, the Timeo overlooks Taormina and Mount Etna.

The Souvenir?
I believe that ceramics are an inevitable souvenir to take away as a memory. Don Corleone Ceramics personally represents the contemporary craftsmanship of the place, but the works of master Tino Giammona also leave a lasting impression on the eyes and the heart.
